The Edward Gostling Foundation registered as an independent charity with the Charity Commission in 1998 to implement our founder, Edward ‘Ted’ Gostling’s vision ‘that people living on a low income who had a disability or long-term illness should have as many as possible of the same choices, quality of life opportunities and aspirations as others more fortunate than themselves’.

In 2021, having already awarded in excess of £53M to many worthy people and projects, our Trustee Board decided they could meet this Vision and achieve significantly more social value and impact by spending our total charitable funds, about £100M, over 10 years and we embarked on our strategy of ‘spending out’.

Today we only work with our chosen and much valued Legacy Partners. Like many charities, our Legacy Partners are facing unprecedented challenges with a growing number of vulnerable people in communities throughout the UK, as well as increased costs and falling income. Our Legacy funding will help support their capacity to be effective and grow sustainably.

We are well on our way to delivering our Legacy and are proud of the difference our Legacy Partners tell us we are making to the people and communities who rely so heavily on them and will continue to do so long after we have gone.

We estimate achieving our commitment by 2032 when we hope our ‘Legacy’ will be that we have helped to underpin a number of charities and through their efforts, many people will continue to receive the support they need in their lives.
