child making toast in accessible kitchen

Beyond Autism

We recently helped to fund Beyond Autism’s project to transform two small and underused basement rooms at their specialist school, Park House in Wandsworth, into a large teaching space that resembles a domestic kitchen. Work completed in November and, as the picture shows, the new facilities are now being enjoyed by their young people.

The kitchen has provided teachers the opportunity to work with children who have extreme food aversion and food selectivity, as well as giving them the facilities they need to be able to teach the children key independent living skills. Post teenage learners can work on their vocational skills in the kitchen too.

The charity says the launch of the kitchen provided them an opportunity to develop further information content and resources for families relating to ‘autism and eating’ and these are available at their website.
